Episode 69: Sachi Cunningham

Sachi Cunningham -- big wave surfing photography, film making, gender equity on tour

In Episode 69 we speak with Sachi Cunningham, a legendary woman of the water who has been photographing the waves of Mavericks and other heavy breaks for close to 20 years. Sachi shares her stories of developing her strength swimming in the water as a youth then finding her passion for photography, surfing, and waves. We hear of Sachi’s first day swimming and shooting at big Ocean Beach, her progression of capturing big wave photos from the water at both Mavericks and Jaws, and the big wave community she has been part of for so long. Sachi talks about her focus for helping women in professional big wave surfing reach gender equity on the world tour and her current project, She Change The Film, that documents the events and key figures in that awesome story. We also hear Sachi’s physical and mental approach to swimming in big surf and introducing her young daughter to the ocean.

Episode 39: George Scheppler

George 'Schepp' Scheppler - Navy Rescue Swimmer, Ocean Athlete Trainer

In Episode 39 we speak with George ‘Schepp’ Scheppler, a man inspired by 9-11 to dedicate his strength in the water to serving the American people. Schepp takes us through his youth in the waters of Cape Cod on the U.S East Coast, the story of the moments he felt compelled to serve his country as a rescue swimmer in the U.S Navy, and his time training and traveling the world in that capacity. We hear of Schepp’s open ocean swimming with full rescue gear (!), his passion for supporting the veteran community, and his focus for helping others find their strength and safety in the water through the Coastal Athlete Program. Schepp is super inspirational and a pleasure to listen to — very thankful to have him on the show.

In Episode 22 we speak with Grace Van Der Byl, an amazing woman of the water who has built an incredible career around endurance open ocean swimming. Grace shares her stories of finding her passion for long-distance swimming at a young age, competing multiple years in the Tahiti Waterman Challenge, swimming around Manhattan, and tackliing the Catalina Channel at night (sorry sharks, no shadow to see). Grace provides a unique perspective on the mental and physical aspect of competing in these 20+ mile swims and what motherhood means to her and her ocean life.
